Faith Without Works

Acting on beliefs is held to be essential at certain points in our recovery. This quote from James 2:26 was a favorite of both Bill W. and Anne Smith (see Dr. Bob and the Good Oldtimers Page 71)

Big Book:

“Particularly was it imperative that I work with others as he [Ebby] had worked with me. Faith without works was dead, he said.”

“Now we need more action, without which we find that “Faith without works is dead.’ Let’s look at Steps Eight and Nine.”

“But this is not all. There is action and more action. ‘Faith without works is dead.’ The next chapter is entirely devoted to Step Twelve.”

12 & 12:

"...we placed humility first. When we began to do that, we recieved the gift of faith, a faith which works. This faith is for you, too."
Page 30, Step Two

“We saw them meet and transcend their other pains and trials. We saw them calmly accept impossible situations, seeking neither to run nor to incriminate. This was not only faith that worked under all conditions. We soon concluded that whatever the price in humility we must pay, we would pay.”

"Faith, to be sure, is necessary, but faith alone can avail nothing."
Page 34, Step Three

“Without a searching and fearless moral inventory, most of us have found that the faith that really works in daily living is still out of reach.”
