Footloose (1984) Paramount

Written by Dean Pitchford, Directed by Herbert Ross

Starring: Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, Christopher Penn, John Lithgow, Dianne Weist, Sarah Jessica Parker

There`s a New Kid in Town, but this one is a notch in the old Bible Belt. Kevin and his newly-divorced mother move to this area from Chicago to be with relatives and start a new life together.

`Round Here, adults consider rock `n roll, dancing, etc to be sinful, but some of the kids are secretly rebellious, including Sarah, daughter of preacher and town council president John. When Kevin inadvertently exposes the town`s teenage sins, he`s blamed for being the very cause of all the trouble.

Trials and tribulations ensue, but our hero, emboldened by the support of all the kids, fights on. The battle lines are clearly drawn. He feels completely hemmed in, and his only outlet is to... dance! (No wonder they made a Broadway musical out of this.) He tries to organize a school dance, but is turned down by the council.

However, a zoning loophole allows it to go on as planned in a building with an arcane exemption. Properly chaperoned, the dance is good clean fun for all the kids, and the elders of the town, including the intelligent and well-meaning Reverend John and wife Dianne, are open to more expressions of young people`s exuberence.
