Our hero is the son of a humble commercial fisherman, and has just been admitted to a prestigious medical school. His working-class background and can-do attitude serve him well as he begins the gruelling first year regimen with his nervous roommate and the rest of his study group. Matthew alone is free from fear of the immense workload and Christine, the fierce female professor.
His bravado and brash manner earn him the special attention of the prof, but he produces and earns his props. Matthew also motivates his partners, and begins to win over the heart of the snobbish Daphne.
Alas, Matt`s cockiness, increasingly slack work habits, male bravado and demanding night job slowly take their toll on him and the rest of the group. He eventually quits out of frustration, condemming all of them to scholastic purgatory.
A plea from Daphne and news of the prof`s deadly illness bring our boy back to lead his medical school team to victory through the sheer force of his personal will and dedication. Only after the final exam is it known that the inspirational teacher has already died.
Most of her students will study on, despite many difficulties, and at least one romance has bloomed because of her presence...guess who?
