Innocent Fun/Young Ambition

Love Potion #9 (1992) 20th Century Fox

Written, Directed and Produced by Dale Launer

Starring: Tate Donovan, Sandra Bullock, Mary Mara, Dale Midkiff, Hilliary Bailey Smith, Dylan Baker, Blake Clark, Bruce McCarty, Adrian Paul

Tate is the leader of the testosterone-laden lab team, while Sandra heads up a gang of science gals. Both are love-starved nerds, however, and suffer from a pronounced lack of appropriate affection.

Tate, out of desperation, visits a Gypsy woman and receives a special mythical love potion. An accidental exposure in his lab shows the power of the substance, and our boy calls in his gal pal and fellow scientist to help in researching this interesting subject. The lab results are impressive, but insufficient. The dedicated scientists decide to split the remaining sample and conduct "field experiments" in uncontrolled conditions.

It all begins as sound science, but if it stayed there, you know the movie wouldn`t be on this website. Hijinx ensue as the potion makes each science geek a love magnet, leading them to pleasures and pit falls they`d never dreamt of before. They both get makeovers and become dreamboats.

Despite the romantic successes of each of our earnest researchers, they fall in love...with each other! Who would have guessed? Alas, an old boyfriend from Sandra`s past comes back to town, and all of Tate`s efforts to displace him come to naught. Too bad there isn`t a pill she can take to cure the situation-but there is, for the old boyfriend has the love potion as well!

Tate goes back to the Gypsy and gets a stronger potion, the newly improved Love Potion #9, which will overcome the outdated #8 which all of them had been using. In the end, our lovers` natural pheremones are more powerful than any magic potion imaginable. You get the drift... Yadda, Yadda, Yadda...

Trivia: Cameo by Oscar winning actress Anne Bancroft as the Gypsy. Also, check out Tate in his earlier role as the star of Dangerous Curves from the Fully Farcicle category.
