Oxford Blues (1984) MGM

Written and Directed by Robert Boris, Produced by Cassian Elweys

Starring: Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, Amanda Pays, Julian Sands, Cary Elweys

Our boy is an intelligent, athletic student, but impulsive. His dream to attend Oxford is partly fueled by an obsession for the very popular Lady Amanda, who is soon to matriculate to this particular institution. Rob manages to get enroll as well, by means better left unmentioned here.

Will he survive in this very Old School, with its traditions and heritage, or will his American bravado disgust his proper British hosts? Rob makes a poor first impression, but has tolerant and understanding Dons at Oxford. His fellows are much less forgiving, however: the battle lines are clearly drawn between those who have yet to earn the pedigrees they`ve inherited and our hero, who has the effrontery to simply seize life when he can.

Rob`s rival for the Lady`s hand is also his greatest antagonist in school. Julian, son of a scion, or something, is the best row-master in his college, and our boy happens also to specialise in this very un-American sport. A trumped-up charge gets pretty boy Rob sent down, but Ally, a fellow Yank and student coach, helps save his Oxford career. Long after Cary and the true snobs humiliate Rob, one Don still believes in him, and one Nobleman, his enemy, does as well: Julian is forced to recognize Rob as the best rear man he`s ever seen, and the mutually opposed mates crew together to defeat the Harvard rowing team which had defeated their own college some 25 years ago. Egads! The Brits have long memories-but this is part of the lesson young master Rob was supposed to learn. The rich Brit boy gets the Lady, and Rob is happy to fall in love with the cute, but unassuming Ally.

Trivia: Rob`s younger brother Chad Lowe (now married to Hillary Swank-movie Buffy, 90210, Karate Kid III, not to mention her newly-minted 2000 Oscar) is the computer geek who helps our hero get into Oxford. He would later star in his own film, Nobody`s Perfect, which YMP couldn`t find-it was from the early 90`s, and also a lessons learned type of film, but kind of amusing.
