The story revolves around a dead body and the aftermath of its discovery. Turning Stand By Me on its head, the body here is that of a close friend, and another friend has killed her. The killer is apathetic and probably a sociopath, while the other friends are also emotionally numb and help hide the crime-more out of hatred of authority than personal loyalty.
Glover is particularly good as the manic ringleader of the coverup, Hopper is up to his usual antics as a chemically-enhanced psycho, and Keannu is his usual sympathetic, lovable boob, who eventually reports the crime to the police.
Even the hardened detectives are shocked by the Kids` indifference to their friend`s fate, and by their sordid, squalid amorality. Even Dennis, the older psycho, comes to be shocked by the younger generation, and puts down the unrepentant killer like the mad dog that he is. It`s every man for himself as the conspiracy of silence breaks down.
The original victim is given a proper ceremony in a church, but her friends still cannot find a single tear for her suffering.
Comment: Very good early example of flannel clothing and long, uncut hair as clues indicating laziness and slacker mentality evolving into utter nihilism.
