Summer School (1987) Paramount

Written by Jeff Franklin, Directed by Carl Reiner

Starring: Mark Harmon, Kirstie Alley, Dean Cameron, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Ethan Cohen

Our hero is a young, hapless gym teacher forced by the evil Vice Principal to give up his luxury vacation to teach some backward students in summer school, or face losing his chance at tenure. It`s rough going at first with the motley crew of ruffians as he`s unfamiliar with the classroom, and has to earn their respect.

To complicate matters, a beautiful new teacher for advanced students joins the faculty and teaches ambititious, bright students in the very next room. Alas, Mark makes a poor first impression, and Kirstie seems more interested in the evil VP.

Mark makes progress with the kids, however, by breaking several teaching traditions, getting personally involved with them, and simply being himself. This does not go unnoticed by either the dedicated Kirstie or the jealous VP.

A rigorous surprise test at the end of the summer term forces a massive cram session by the rejects, but with the help of Mark and Kirstie, they show marked improvement. The Principal returns and sees that the results are not spectacular, but is impressed by their progress, and disappointed by his assistant`s actions. The kids are victorious and the teachers fall in love-everyone is happy!

Trivia: Ethan Cohen is the younger brother of Mindy, who starred in TV`s Facts of Life with a very young Molly Ringwald, Nancy McKeon (High School USA) and who could forget Blair (Lisa Welchel) and Tootie (Kim "living Single" Fields)? Also, Dean and Courtney starred together the year before in the TV series Fast Times at Ridgemont High, along with Patrick Dempsey (courtesy of IMDB-see Trivia/Links).
