Can`t Buy Me Love (1987)

Written by Steve Rash, Directed by Michael Swerdlick

Starring: Patrick Dempsey, Amanda Peterson, Courtney Gaines, Amy Dolenz, Seth Green, Max Perlich, Tina Caspany, Shannon Farrel, Dennis Dugan

It`s the Southland once again, and everyone seems to have a preternatural sophistication-the bikini babes, the dudes, the divorced parents: everyone`s cool until push comes to shove.

A valley girl borrows and wrecks her divorced Mom`s sexy leather outfit, and must pay for it. A cash-worthy, working-class geek with a heart of gold volunteers to loan her the money...if she`ll pretend to go out with him for a month. She will get paid, and his social status will rise dramatically.

As you might expect, most everyone learns a lesson or two: the rich gal learns the value of honest hard work, the geek learns about true social interaction, etc. Most importantly, the beauty queen and our lowly hero actually fall in love, but give up on the whole thing when the month is over.

However the heart never forgets, and our young lovers yearn for each other, even after the dating for dollars deal is exposed, causing both of them much humiliation. Both the haves and have nots are threatened by the inter-class love affair, but everyone eventually overcomes his own personal hypocrisy in the end, and is the better person for it.

Moral of the story: it`s not pretty, nor is it pink, but it is some kind of a wonderful ending.

Trivia: choreography of a few cheerleading scenes by Paula Abdul. Also, flannel-wearing, skateboard riding slackers are evident in this movie, an early sign of what was to come. Finally, Max Perlich, a veteran FFTTM cameo player, worked with current FFTTM star Seth Green in this film. They would be reunited later on TV`s Buffy, where Seth is a regular character and which once featured Max as an important guest star. Seth is now a major teen icon of the current generation.
