Once again, it`s the Southland, ground zero for many teen capers and fertile soil for teen nihilism, as well. We`ve got a quartet of cuties, a beavy of beauties headed by two-time Oscar winner Jodie and Runaways rocker Cherie. Their sidekick is the hipster skateboarder Scott, who has certainly seen happier days.
Each of them has a story: non-existent or uncaring parents, poor self esteem, etc., and their constant partying (especially Cherie`s) has a desperate quality about it. They are truly cryng out for adult guidance while they avoid vengeful parents, host a disastrous house party and endure the everyday humiliations of living the La Vida Loca. (there was a movie long before the song, YMP swears to you!)
The others survive and thrive after the gruesome death of the near-suicidal Cherie in a freak car accident. Marriage, college, etc.- they begin to act and think like young adults for the first time. Life goes on for the survivors.
Jodie stops and reminisces at the grave of her fallen friend, puts out her cigarette, and continues on her way to college.
Comment: even though many of our heroines seem to find the right path in the end, they`ve all gone through too much of the muck and mire of the Low Life to be so easily forgiven.
Trivia: cameo appearances by a very young and dorky-looking Laura Dern as a house party crasher and sleazy second banana Robert Romanus, who provides our gals with their highly-covetted tickets to the Event O` the Year, the Angel concert.
