Heaven Help Us (1985) HBO Pictures

Written by Charles Purpura, Directed by Michael Dinner

Starring: Donald Sutherland, John Heard, Andrew McCarthy, Mary Stuart Masterson, Kevin Dillon, Malcolm Danare, Wallace Shawn

Andrew is a transfer student in a Brooklyn Catholic school in 1965. It`s tougher than his old parochial school, so they must be Jesuits here. One of the brothers is particularly stern, and our boy comes to feel his wrath while covering for another, more popular and established student. The new guy is now welcomed into the cool kids` hangout after school-a nearby malt shop, run by the very cute daughter of the owner.

When the hangout results in clean teen love (hugs and kisses only) and other forbidden activities, the brothers of the school move to have it closed down on technical legal grounds. The kids can tolerate corporal punishment, but rebel most forcefully when their one innocent outlet for fun is taken away! A confrontation with the stern brother turns into a public beating of Andrew, which disgusts the rest of the faculty and alerts them to the need for moderation, resulting in the installation of a younger and hipper brother (an obvious product of Vatican II) as the new dean of students.

Trivia: cameos by Yeardley Smith, Larry "Bud" Melman, and Patrick Dempsey and Stephen Geoffrey, both of whom would later headline their own FFTTMs.
