Losin` It (1982)

Written by BWL Norton and Bryan Gindoff, Directed by Curtis Hanson

Starring: Tom Cruise, Shelley Long, Jackie Early Haley, John Stockwell, John P. Navin Jr, Henry Darrow

It`s the early 1960`s, but our boys have an eternal goal in mind, hence the title of this film. They intend to "score" way down in Tiajuana, where, as every school boy knows, you can rent someone`s sister for only a few pesos. Alas, they must also take the driver`s younger, wealthier brother for financial support, because he wants to make a quick profit on innocent contraband. Along the way they encounter Shelley, who suddenly wants to leave her husband, and needs a quickie Mexican divorce.

Life is a bit more complicated than the stereotypes our protagonists believe, and they soon realize it. Women cost plenty, their "managers" are less than scrupulous, and no one is as money-hungry as our naive boys would like to think. They insult their hosts, who then try to take justifiable revenge. No one scores, though one tough guy tries very hard and gets beaten down for his efforts. Tom, the most sensitive of the group, becomes close to our would-be divorce`, but they both have too much taste to follow through.

They get back home just ahead of an angry Mexican sheriff, all the wiser and none the worse for wear, and lil` brother even made a healthy profit on the deal. The others merely learned an important lesson in life.

Trivia: John P. Navin looks just like YMP`s friend Mike, and even portrayed a military school student in an episode of "Facts of Life", which once featured a young Molly Ringwald among its cast, while Mike went to military school for one year in high school. Also, John P. Navin and Shelley Long both appeared in the pilot episode of a sitcom which debuted this same year: Cheers. Finally, Tom Cruise, aka underwear boy, has gone on to a very successful movie career, including two Oscar nominations.
