Sleazy Adventures

Little Darlings (1980) Paramount

Written by Kimi Peck and Darlene Young, Directed by Ronald F. Maxwell

Starring: Kristy MacNichol, Tatum O`Neal, Matt Dillon, Armand Assante, Krista Erickson, Alexa Kenin, Maggie Blye, Mary Bettyn

Kristy is from a solid working-class background while Tatum comes from Old Money and dates tennis stars, so you just know they`re gonna tangle when they go to summer camp together as counselors to younger girls. Meow, let the cat fight begin!

It turns out that despite their female bravada, both are less experienced in the ways of love than some of their charges, embarrassing them both and forcing a contest over which can "become a woman" first.

Various and sundry female hijinx ensue-stealing a men`s room condom vending machine, a food fight at camp, femme chat on matters of love, etc. Much of the camp becomes divided into chearleading squads for each of the heroines engaged in this unique form of single combat.

Kristy and Tatum each pick likely targets for affection and victory, but irony is the end result: Kristy "scores" while Tatum fails, but both lie about it, therefore the "loser" wins...Once again, working class honor trumps class snobbery, despite appearances.

However Girl Power trumps hijinx here, which is why they`re not usually allowed in our clubhouse. The gals forget their important competition to unite and destroy the nascent class system among the younger generation of females at the camp. The heroines forget their own class animosity and become fast friends in the end.

Trivia: a spoiled, upper class would-be hippie is seen early on touting the virtues of "extracts" such as ginseng and the like 15 years before they really became cool. Such prescience is to be admired!
