Light of Day (1987) Tri-Star

Written and Directed by Paul Schrader

Starring: Michael J. Fox, Joan Jett, Gena Rowlands, Michael McKean, Thomas G. Waites, Cherry Jones

It`s Cleveland, a working-class midwestern city, which just happens to host the Best Unsigned Band in the World: The Barbusters, featuring Michael and his sister Joan (another Runaways alumnus). They have a loyal following, but little income. They all have to keep day jobs except for the rebellious Joan, who ignores such pragmatic concerns as money and even her own fatherless child. She chases the Rock and Roll Dream, and whoever can`t keep up is left behind.

When a couple of the guys are laid off, the band tries to take the act on the road, but barely manages to survive in strange towns with very low pay. They break up upon returning home, the guys get their jobs back, and Michael takes care of his young, neglected nephew as Joan leaves again with a very rough crowd to pursue stardom.

Her latest venture inevitably leads to failure and degradation. This, missing her child, and their mother`s imminent death bring the prodigal daughter back home for a brother and sister reunion, and a return to her true roots: her family. She comes out of her darkness into the light of day.

Trivia: cameo appearance by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails as a member of another bar band: you just know a hipster like him would love to burn the video!
