Mystery Date (1991) Orion Pictures

OK, here`s the setup: we`ve got a high school guy who obsesses about a beautiful college coed housesitting for an absent neighbour across the street. He`s in love but is far too shy and insecure to follow up on his desires.

One week, when the `rents are away, Ethan`s older brother Brian comes back from law school for a visit and proceeds to give him pointers and even pays for a male makeover, which only enhances their brotherly resemblance. Brian has always been more successful, especially with the femmes, so young Ethan is eager for all the advice and help he can get.

Thus emboldened, and equipped with his older bro`s car, clothes and ID, Ethan is able to ask and take out the Girl of his Dreams on a real date to fine restauraunt, drink a little wine with dinner, visit an exclusive club, and party as if he were actually older than 18.

But alas, there has been an ulterior motive behind older bro`s advice and direction for the innocent Ethan: Brian has been leading a double life as a player in the underworld while studying Law, and is now on the run from the evil Hong Kong Mob. He`d hoped that while Ethan was made to look like him, he would distract the ganstas but stay safe while Brian mended all the necessary fences and remove himself from the criminal life altogether.

Meanwhile, Ethan sees many strange things during his Big Date, which seems to be going quite well due his brother`s wise advice. Thusly pumped up in confidence, our boy fully focuses on the beautiful Teri, and is therefore quite slow in detecting the dangerous persons who have definite designs on the dude they believe is their enemy.

Hijinx ensue as Ethan finally realizes his danger, keeps up the pretence of a real date, and fights off the bad guys while properly entertaining the beautiful Teri, all the while scheming to rendezvous with Brian to finally find out what`s happening.

Older Brother Brian is sufficiently contrite and has a good, true story of how he intends to reform, so Ethan is satisfied that Bro is going straight and is no longer angry. Also, he gets the girl!
