There is an exceptionally brilliant young physics student who is admitted at age 15 to a prestigious California university to work on on an important research project under the tutelage of a highly reknowned professor.
In this path he follows an equally brilliant forebear, Val, who entered the university at the age of 12, but has become burnt out and cynical since then. The elder prodigy still produces first-rate work, but has turned into a merry prankster and goofball in his off hours in order to preserve his sanity. He is now dedicated to saving young Gabe from the dark side of being smart: geekiness and snobbery.
Pranks are played and hijinx pursued, all with the idea of making fun important to our young hero. Alas, the credentials of the older, respected professor carry more weight at first, and fun-loving Val is virtually cut out of the picture.
Unbeknownst to everyone, the professor is secretly working for the Defense Department, and his students are researching a new Star Wars type of secret weapon. Our boys find out, but only after solving the last crucial problem preventing the weapon`s final deployment.
Their mission, should they choose to accept it, is to disable the weapon, disparage the professor`s project, and proceed to party.
Needless to say, the heroes rise to the occasion and succeed.
Trivia: Val would later portray another superhero-Batman.
