Written, Directed and Produced by John Hughes-a hat trick for St. John Starring: Kevin Bacon, Elizabeth McGovern, Alec Baldwin, William Windon, Paul Gleason, Cathryn Damon, John Ashton, Dennis Dugan, Eddie McClurg |
Grad student Kevin marries longtime love Elizabeth after much heartfelt encouragement from best bud Alec. Despite her working full time, the young couple are in deep financial straits, and the man of the house must sacrifice his honor as a writer to take on a well-paying job as a hack writer of commercial slogans, foresaking his place in the literary pantheon.
The solvent couple settles in the suburbs, and a subsequent block party reveals just how much they differ from most of their neighbors, and from each other. Their initial romance has given way to a loveless routine, which is further exposed during a visit by Kevin`s old playboy friend Alec.
Our hero has dreams at night of a fantasy woman and daydreams of leaving his depressing job environment. Elizabeth also has a dream of how to escape from the doldrums of a boring marriage: pregnancy. She makes it so! They are both eager for their new offspring, and are reinvigorated, romantically, spiritually and otherwise. A complicated but successful delivery seals the deal for our two love birds as they cut the cord on the last faint memories of adolescence and truly take their first steps as adults in this complicated life.
Comment: say good-bye to John Hughes, for this was his last film to remotely qualify for our genre. He grew up (or at least his career did), but some of us never will!
Trivia: a vitual cavalcade o` stars make cameos during the closing credits, including many of St John`s former FFTTM stars and others, in which they suggest names for the young boy born in the movie. We even see St Ferris for a moment! Also, William Windon, Kevin`s father-in-law, looks just like YMP`s friend Glen, also a good friend of Mike`s, only 30 years older.
