Side Out (1990) Tri-Star

Written by David Thoreau (!), Directed by Peter Israelson

Starring: C. Thomas Howell, Peter Horton, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Harley Jane Kozak, Christopher Rydell

Our hero C., having relearned the rules he once broke, is a newly- minted lawyer seeking a job at a distant relative`s L.A. Law firm. Having been relegated to a lowly position of filing evictions on foreclosed properties, C. runs across a grizzled veteran of life, a post-"Thirty-Something" guy who`s given up his regular weekly TV angst for a shot at beach movie heroism. It`s seldom a wise career move.

Our neo-Repo Man must go up against Peter, the Dude of the Beach. They battle each other, one fighting on strictly legal grounds, the other arguing about larger life issues. They end up as friends, and decide to fight together against the Man via the great and honourable game of...volleyball.

Peter the Dude has been hiding from his own conscience and the shame of a previous match he threw as a favour for a woman, and all the lost opportunities which resulted. Even as he teaches C., our young Jedi, about the Force, Peter has to grapple with the Dark Side once again, as that woman, now an aggressive beach developer, returns to ensure that our heroes don`t win the beach volleyball championship, for fear that the resulting prestige will allow them to halt further building.

Will the Dude sell himself and others out once again for momentary pleasure, or will he stay true this time?

After a grueling match, our boys emerge victorious, save the beach, and the girl leaves in a furious huff. Also, C. wins the affections of Courtney, who had previously looked upon him with great skepticism, to say the least!

Trivia: Cameo by Kathy Ireland
