In early `60`s Maine, a group of young friends, about to enter middle school and sensing their childhood world is about to change, set off on a weekend hiking and camping trip to celebrate the end of summer. On a darker note, a more immediate motivation for the trek is the rumor that a classmate and slight acquiantance was hit by a train and that his body still lies near the bridge over the river where he was struck.
Each member is different, with individual strengths and weaknesses, but the team is important to all of them. Along the way to their quest, many of these are explored. The boys encounter many perils, including leeches when they go skinny-dipping, and a near miss with a train on another river bridge. The buds manage to survive all this, however, and approach their goal.
Meanwhile, the Outsiders, a gang of older boys led by Corey`s older brother Keiffer, with first-hand knowledge of the dead kid, also approach the River`s Edge, and arrive soon after our young heroes. After a brief confrontation ending with the proper, defensive use of a concealed handgun, River, Corey, et al win the fight, and the reward for the discovery of the body. However, as that was never the true purpose of the mission, they report it anonymously, forgoing potential fame and certain cash. Our boys are growing up.
The future paths of the young men is sketched out for us-where they have been since `62. Fade to black as we see our esteemed narrator for the first time, in the present, as he finishes typing the story into his computer for publication, and looks at his own young boys...
Trivia: Cameo and narration by Richard Dreyfuss. Corey and River need no introduction. Will Wheaton was a original star of Star Trek: The Next Generation; and Jerry was an original star of the current Sci-Fi (formerly Fox) series Sliders and has been in Jerry McGuire (with Tom Cruise), among other films.
