The beginning of an era: John Hughes` first film of his own.
Molly, our angst-ridden heroine, is especially precocious this day, her sweet 16th birthday, but finds herself forgotten as her older sister`s wedding the next day has suddenly taken precedence over the entire family`s life. Embarrassing relatives come to stay overnite for the big event, displacing the red-headed princess from her very own bed! What`s a respectable, mid-western Valley Girl wannabe to do?
Heck, she goes to the wild high school dance with a couple of girl friends, fends off Anthony and his geek entourage, and falls for popular jock Michael, who is tired of his spoiled, drunken rich friends. He`s enthralled by Molly`s innate sweetness, and Anthony the geek gives him good advice on how to approach St. Molly.
Molly returns home late and receives an apology from Dad for the family`s forgetfulness. Gedde, the Asian exchange student in Molly`s house, parties the hardiest, with predictable results.
In the denoument, everything turns out as it should: Molly and her rich boy hook up after the big wedding, the geek gets the rich, gorgeous girl the richie set him up with, the family is happy...
Trivia: Cameos by Joan Cusak, Jamie Gertz and Brian Doyle-Murray. John Cusak, one of Anthony`s geeks, would never again be a second banana.
