Valley Girl (1983)

Written by Andrew Lane and Wayne Crawford, Directed by Martha Coolidge.

Starring: Nicholas Cage, Deborah Foreman, Elizabeth Daily, Michael Bowen, Cameron Dye, Heidi Holicker, Michelle Meyrink, Lee Purcell, Richard Sanders, Colleen Camp, Frederick Forrest

Deborah is hanging at the mall with her best val gal pals, fer sher, and Girl Power makes her break it off with Michael, who hasn`t called in two whole days (Omigod!). Our heroine and her entire entourage repair to the beach, where they run across Nicholas and best bud Cameron. Significant eye contact is made. (Wink, wink!)

Alas, our boys are Hollywood punks, but no one knows it until they crash the valley party they heard about and arrive in full punk regalia (it`s really Duran Duran neo-romantic and New Wave, but this one tries to be a polite movie!). After being kicked out by brutish valley boys, our hero sneaks back in and convinces the fair Deborah to go off with him for a last minute date. Our guy shows her a wild, unpredictable side to life outside the safe, suburban valley.

When word of their secret, inter-class love affair gets out, Michael and his social allies put out the message that Deborah is now bogus. Her girlfriends convince her to give up the "loser" and go back to the boorish boyfriend during a moment of weakness, and the blossoming romance is now kaput. (Molly, Andrew and James have probably seen this one before) (Also Lea, Eric and Mary)

However, Nicholas and Cameron concoct a plan to crash the Prom, and manage to win our girl back for the deserving hero. Nicholas wins a mano y mano fight with Michael, and the reunited couple steal the latter`s luxury limosine and head off to a hotel to the tune of "I Melt for You". Fade to black as true love reigns supreme...

Trivia: Cameos by the Payolas and Josie Cotton as themselves. Elizabeth Daily and Michael Bowen should be familiar names to eager webfans by now (if not, see the Trivia page). Also, Click Next once or twice to see how Deborah fares in the future.

Personal note: one time when YMP was visiting an old friend in the Southland around `85 or so, back in the good ol` days, he bought a few expensive T-shirts in a Melrose Avenue boutique and was prepared to exit the store when some dude who was about to enter held the door open for him and entered after YMP stepped outside. The friend, Robert S, who waited outside, was very excited to inform Your Modest Pagemaster that this was Nicholas Cage himself. Not being well-versed at that time, YMP had no clue as to the significance of this event.
